We LOVE engagement shoots! Not only is it a fun time for us to take some time to stage shots in a bit slower pace setting, but it is also a great time for us to get to know a couple before the wedding. As photographers, we get to see how a couple interacts with one another and that helps us understand how to best photograph them on the wedding day.

When we meet couples for the engagement shoot, we try and make it as relaxed as we can. We also bring a few other things to a shoot when we show up!

First, an easy-going attitude. We know a lot of people generally haven’t spent that much time in front of a camera. If a person is uncomfortable and uneasy, the camera picks it up. While we don’t expect couples to feel comfortable right away, we aim to make them feel as comfortable as humanly possible. We ask them about how they met, their pets, and crack jokes the whole time. This also helps us all start a relationship with our couple!

Second, an eye for composition. We really push ourselves to find great ways to not only photograph our couples but to also make a photograph that has great visual composition. This makes the photos stand the test of time so you can enjoy them for years to come. A great photo stands the test of time.

Third, a knowledge base of poses. There are some poses that work for people and there are also some that don’t- we try and work with the couple, their comfort level, and how their bodies will work best together when posing them. While it sometimes takes few snaps to get the true feel for how our couples move together, we work to get our couples into poses that work best for them.

Lastly, a love for what we do. We truly count ourselves among the luckiest people in the world to get to spend special time with some amazing people. We find the extra time we spend with couples during engagement shoots to be where our relationships grow. We get to know them as a couple and start to learn about them individually. We are so lucky!

Engagement photos are a great time for you to start to feel comfortable in front of the camera and also to get to know your photographers! This is a great time to ask questions as well so ask away! The more comfortable you feel, the better your engagement and wedding photos will be!
